The search is on to find a new school principal. Through the end of the school year, we are fortunate to have Sister Anna Marie Gaglia from the Sisters of St. Joseph in Baden with us to provide Diocesan administrative supervision, faculty support and to be a presence to the children and parents on a daily basis as much as possible. Sister Anna Marie’s background is in education and psychology and she was a good friend of our past principal, Sister Margaret Berry. Welcome Sister Anna Marie!

SR. MARGARET BERRY, CSJ
ENTERED INTO ETERNAL LIFE - FEBRUARY 13, 2008

The Sisters of St. Joseph, Baden, PA ask for your prayers for the soul of Sister Margaret Berry, CSJ, Principal of St. John of God School, who died early Wednesday morning, February 13, 2008. Viewing will be at the St. Joseph Motherhouse, Baden, PA on Sunday, February 17, from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Monday, February 18, from 11 AM to 2:30 PM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 3:00 PM. In the Motherhouse.

Please Note: The 1:15 PM St. John of God School Mass at the Chapel on Wednesday, Feb. 20, will be for the repose of the soul of Sister Margaret. Everyone is welcome to join us.

If you visited the school during Catholic Schools Week, you may have noticed the gleaming staircases in the freshly painted school colors of maroon and gray accenting the white marble stairs. This was the inspiration of Sue Tutino and Patty Paul. The women decided to spruce things up a bit, even changing some of the light bulbs. The band of painters expanded to include some parents, grandparents, students and alumni: Bonnie Dorrenbacher, Gina Halbedl, Rochelle and Scooter Hager, John Robb along with Leah and Sara Tutino and Kristen Hayes.

The school received several boxes of white pocket folders thanks to the Suburban Gazette newspaper. Students and faculty made great use of the folders. We extend our thanks and appreciation to the Suburban Gazette newspaper.

Our thanks to Jenny Lee Bakery for supplying cookies for the Sunday Open House.

ST. JOHN OF GOD SCHOOL NEWS...
Dear Parishioners: This is the second installment on information about St. John of God School. This information is in response to surveys from the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools. All schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh participated in the evaluations by this commission over the past 10 years. This is St. John of God’s second survey in six years for the purpose of continuing accreditation with the Middle States Commission.

Questions were indicated as to whether or not: “Administrators, teachers, students, and parents are prepared through formal training and experience to impart knowledge of the Catholic Faith.”

We do not have records regarding the parents, but for teachers:

It is a requirement of the Diocese of Pittsburgh that no one may teach religion in the Catholic School until they have completed basic courses in theology: Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and the Catholic Philosophy of Education.

All teachers and administrators must consistently update theology through courses offered by the Diocese, or they may take courses at Catholic Universities. Certification to teach religion must be renewed every five years. All religion teachers are certified by the Diocese of Pittsburgh to teach religion.

Our school counselor has a master’s degree in theology and counseling.

Our present principal has a doctorate in history with a strong background in Church History. She has theology/religious education credits equal to or beyond a master’s degree.

We have weekly liturgy, daily prayer and religious instruction. Religious instruction is 30-40 minutes daily for each grade and is based on Diocesan curriculum and Diocesan approved religion text books. There is a consistent interaction of teachers and other school personnel with students encouraging them to act in a Christian and profoundly human way.

We will continue these reports regarding the Middle States Survey until we have covered the various areas of interest or concern. Thank you so much for your interest and support.

Dear Parishioners - We recently completed a Middle States Survey as a step to continuing certification by this organization. We have discovered from replies to our survey that you do not know a lot about us! So, we are going to publish a weekly information column to update you about St. John of God School.

In 1999 we had 65 students K-8 and 15 pre-school children. Today we have 160 students K-8 and 35 in the pre-school. That is a rather phenomenal increase. The increase is largely due to the tremendous financial help from our funder, Mr. Bill Wolf, the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, the PA/EITC legislation, the support of St. John of God Parish, and perhaps most of all our wonderful teachers, great parents, and of course those who really make the school, the tremendous children.

We believe our educational program is excellent! We would like to increase our enrollment to at least 200 for the year 2008-2009. If you are interested in Catholic education at St. John of God School, come visit us. There is great financial help available.

During Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 27 to Feb. 8, 2008, stop in and see us. Visit the classes. Join in the various activities. We are an educational institution, but more that that we are a community of Faith, learning, friendship! Come and see!
